Iran Parliament Electes President Hassan Rouhani As New Health Minister

Mumbai: In recent developments, Iran’s parliament elected President Hassan Rouhani as their new health minister, as his predecessor criticized the budget cuts and allocation of state’s funds.

On the other hand, Saeed Namaki was voted into with 229 votes out of a total 259. After resigning on December 3 of the former minister Hassan Ghazizaheed Hashmi, he was appointed as the caretaker by Rohini.

The government’s plan and budget organization, the semi-official news agency ISNA, has pointed out “no discrepancy or fulfillment of promises” in the letter of resignation of Hashemi stated.

Rauhani administration and Hashmi were repeatedly criticized for allegedly costly plan to reform health system of Iran.

But in his last speech as Minister, Hashmi said that a part of the expenditure was spent on the failed credit institutions to get out of the reform project.

“The total money spent… is 164 trillion rials. (Yet they) spent 350 trillion rials on corrupt credit institutions,” he said, in a video of the speech posted on Iran’s video-sharing service Aparat.

The aim of the Health Care Improvement Plan is to reduce medical costs for patients and to ease the reach of Iranians in medical services.

Hassan Rouhani is serving as the current and seventh President of Iran since 3 August 2013. He was also a lawyer, academic, former diplomat and Islamic cleric. He has been a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts since 1999, member of the Expediency Council since 1991, and a member of the Supreme National Security Council since 1989.

Rouhani was deputy speaker of the fourth and fifth terms of the Parliament of Iran (Majlis) and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 1989 to 2005.

Rouhani won re-election in the 2017 election with 23,636,652 votes (57.1%). He became the third Iranian President, after Mohammad Khatami and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to win a presidential victory as an incumbent with an increased electoral mandate.
